--- Live Shows ---
Locations
Front Of House (FOH) - A designated location (typically within the 'sweet spot' for sound within a specific venue), where show staff members are able to control sound, lighting, and any other live show production elements. Professional term for 'soundbooth'.
Greenroom - A designated area (usually a small room, usually directly adjacent to the stage) where performing artists can hang out away from attendees prior to performing. If any hospitality rider items have been provided, they are typically kept in the greenroom.
DJ Booth - Or shortened to just 'Booth', is a table (usually around bar height) usually located on the stage (or floor if boiler room style) where DJ equipment (controller or media player/mixer) is located and where the DJ performs from.
Lighting Control
DMX - Short for DMX512 (DMX = Digital Multiplex) is one of the most common (and oldest) protocols that allows for lighting control. It allows for 512 channels of control (ex: channel 1 is movement of light from right to left, 2 is up/down, etc). DMX programming can be very involved and usually done ahead of show date.
DMX Universe - A collection of 512 DMX channels. There can be multiple universes in operation at the same time however, they are completely independent of each other.
Cabling
Balanced Cable - A cable that has at least 2 conductors (usually one being a ground) in order to minimize sound disruption and/or noise on them. Good for longer runs and should be used in any application it can be to preserve sound clarity.
Unbalanced Cable - A cable that only has 1 conductor (no ground). Susceptible to more interference than balanced cabling. Should be used for short cable runs only and use should be minimized wherever possible.

XLR - A balanced cable capable of transmitting data or sound limitlessly as long as cable integrity is good and there are no other device in the chain. Primarily used to span the distance between the DJ booth to Front Of House and from Front Of House to the speakers. Differs electrically from DMX cables despite looking the same. Usually has a male and female end.
DMX - A specialized cable using the a 3 or 5 pin XLR connector (only 3 pin connector is used for Inferno Collective gear). Electrically different from a standard XLR audio cable. Preferred when utilized when controlling lights since it's electrical properties help minimize noise. Cables are daisy chained between all DMX lighting fixtures you are wanting to control (DMX Chain)

DMX Terminator - A small, usually metal, ending to an DMX cable chain to prevent the signal from bouncing back into the DMX cable chain and causing interference.

RCA - An unbalanced cable where the left and right channels are physically divided in the same cable sheath. Usually denoted by red and white colors for left and right.
1/4 in (Quarter Inch) - A cable that can be balanced or unbalanced depending on the cable. Comes in TS (Tip, Sleeve), TRS (Tip, Ring, Sleeve), and TRRS (Tip, Ring, Ring, Sleeve) variants.

1/4 in TS - Unbalanced cable. Max length of 20 feet without degradation. Should be used on short runs only.
1/4 in TRS - Balanced cable. Should be able to run up to 150 feet without degradation (verification needed).
1/4 in TRRS - Balanced cable. Should be able to run up to 150 feet without degradation (verification needed). Provides enhanced protection against interference/noise.

Cable/Stage Snake - Bundle of (usually) XLR cables running between 2 locations (usually stage to Front of House) that has a patch panel (see picture) on the end of it for easy connection for a large amount of cable runs.
Equipment
Truss - Metal (usually aluminum) framing that allows lighting and/or other production equipment to be hung above the crowd and/or DJ booth. This can be ground mounted (on stands) or flown (hung from rafters or other existing infrastructure).

Moving Head - Common industry term for a type of light that has a component that allows light to be directed in any direction (see picture on the right). This term is not brand-specific.

PAR Can/SlimPAR - Common industry term for a type of light that has a light panel that illuminates in one single direction in a broad beam (see picture on the right). This term is not brand-
specific.

Blinders - Common industry term for any type of light that emits a bright white light consistently in a single direction with a large beam size (see picture on right).
Please note: A blinder can also sometimes mean other types of lights (like PARs) if they have bright enough lights.
Speaker Types

Tops - A type of speaker that covers mid range and high end of the sound spectrum. Good for general use where low end is not critical.

Subwoofer (Sub) - A type of speaker that covers the low end of the sound spectrum. Used in applications where low end bass response is desired. Box is usually much larger than tops.

Monitor - A speaker (usually a top) that is positioned to face the DJ booth to enable the performer to better hear what is coming out of the soundsystem without distortion. Can be on the ground (as a wedge) or mounted on speaker poles or a ground stack
See speakers on poles pictured.
General Terms
Visuals - A video stream played behind and/or on the front of the DJ booth via a projector and/or a video wall.

Types of Tracks
Mashup - A track created from blend of elements from 2 or more different tracks blended into 1 with no original elements from the artist creating the mashup.
Remix - A track officially approved by the original artists' team and/or the artist themselves. Contains original elements from the artist creating the remix.
Bootleg - An unofficial remix created by an artist without the approval of the original artist. Contains original elements from the artist creating the bootleg.
General Terms
Sound Design - Term used to refer to how a specific sound is made, either through granular synthesis or other types of plugins.

Equipment
DJ Controller - Often shortened to just 'Controller', is a piece of equipment that serves all functions needed to be able to mix tracks together. Usually includes 2 or 4 channels.
Media Player - DJ equipment that allows the playback of media files from an external or cloud-based source. Examples of this type of equipment are Pioneer (now AlphaTheta) CDJs and Denon SC6000 series players.
Mixer - Audio equipment that allows 2 or more tracks to be mixed together. Mixers can be typically found in the DJ booth (located between media players, or integrated into a controller) or in Front Of House (FOH), sitting between the output from the DJ booth and the speakers.
